There are two types of movie auditions in the film industry: closed auditions and open auditions. A closed movie audition occurs when the news that a certain role is being cast that requires an approximate age, appearance, ethnicity, height or overall look. The information is usually sent to agents who send actors that fit the part. Closed movie auditions can attract many actors with similar size and physical appearance, unlike open movie auditions which are open to all interested.

Anyone can try out at open movie auditions even if they don’t have an agent. It is not uncommon for performers with little acting experience to attend open movie auditions. An open movie audition is a good opportunity for new talent without agents to get noticed by casting directors and possibly get referred to a good agent.

Open movie auditions have some disadvantages as stage time is limited and good impressions must be made quickly. If the open movie audition doesn’t lead to work right away, making a good impression could lead to work in the future. Open movie auditions can provide a lot of auditioning practice in a short time. Actors with training will fare better than inexperienced beginners who are often dropped early in the movie audition process.

A clear vision of what you want for your career should take into account a realistic view of your movie audition strengths and weaknesses. You will waste less time and get more accomplished if you are focused and realistic about attending all the movie auditions you possibly can.

The survival kit for any Movie Audition is as follows.

Your Head Shot and Resume
Your sides (pages you will read at the audition)
Copy of monologue If a theatre audition or auditions requesting monologues.
A prepared mind. Be so rehearsed that you don't need to look at the pages. (Still have the pages with you in the audition, even if you have memorized them. A casting director may have you read for another character, or you may forget a line.)
Comfortable but presentable clothing. Depending on the part, you will obviously dress to give of a certain look, but don't let your outfit, outdo your performance.
Water. Water. Water. Keep drinking water. It hydrates you and is good for your throat and voice. Just make sure to use the bathroom before your audition. (Most auditions supply water if you ask, but you should always bring your own just incase.
Your manners. Be nice to everyone. Be courteous to the casting assistants. Say your pleases and thank yous just like Mom taught you.
